In Memory of
Menas Kalagian

Menas “Dick” Kalagian, 93 of Manchester, CT, loving husband for fifty-nine years of Grace (Asgejian) Kalagian, passed away at home on Tuesday February 6, 2018 surrounded by his family. Menas was born in Ludlow, MA on March 13, 1924, son of Toran and Nevart (Shahinian) Kalagian. Nevart died suddenly leaving behind three young children, Menas, his brother Edward, and his sister Mary. The role of mother was assumed by Sara Kalagian, who raised the children as if they were her own. Menas graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1942. He began a lifelong career in the food service industry when he and his family opened Kalagian’s Coffee Shop in Northampton, MA. He then worked for Howard Johnson, traveling to all the newly opening stores, training employees on the ice cream/soda fountain. He then joined Kurt and Presley Blake, becoming one of their early managers in the Friendly Ice Cream Shoppes. Dick was with Friendly’s for thirty-three years, managing stores in East Hartford, Wethersfield, and Manchester before retiring in 1986. He was an active member of St. George Armenian Church in Hartford. He was extremely proud of his Armenian heritage, serving on the parish council for many years, and was always in the kitchen, preparing and serving food. His community involvement included the Manchester Rotary Club, where he was bestowed the Paul Harris Award in 1991. Dick was also a member of the Knights of Vartan, the Masons, and the Shriners. He also served as a docent, giving tours at the State Capital. Dick was the epitome of friendly. He loved people and could turn a stranger into a friend in a matter of minutes. He touched countless lives and his kindness and generosity were evident in all that he did. With his wife, he is survived by two children, Gregory Kalagian, of Manchester and Melanie Demircan and her husband Armand of Glastonbury; his precious and adored grandchildren, Alexander and Alexis Demircan; two nieces, Lucine Zikos and her husband Arthur, and Rosemary Beam, her husband Andy, and their children Alicia, George, and Arianna. Dick was predeceased by his brother and sister, his nephew Michael, and his niece Elise. His family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful nurses from hospice for all their love and care of Dick.
